First Slider_ Joy

Joy

Children are aware of what they need to do during the day, and our classrooms provide them with the space to do so. This approach transforms the academic environment into a place where children focus on their personal growth and find joy in the everyday. Dr. Montessori once said to parents, “What if this child knows nothing of the end he will achieve? If he is allowed to use his spontaneous activity in a tranquil environment without interference or unasked-for help, he is indeed engaged in a most important work: he is building the [person] he will one day be.” By creating environments that empower children to be themselves and follow their natural curiosity, learning is exciting and the child’s true self is able to unfold.

Childrens-House-Imagination

Imagination

Within the specific and intentional design of the didactic materials, children can find connections between the works and the areas of the classroom. Limited only by the bounds of their imagination children can explore and use materials within the space to create their understanding of the world.

Thoughtful Design (1)

Thoughtful Design

The gentle flow of sunlight filling the classroom enhances the mood and promotes a sense of focus and calm. By incorporating natural elements in the materials and the space itself, children are invited to engage with the world in a grounded and sensory way.

Freedom Of Movement (1) (1)

Freedom of Movement

Dr. Montessori believed, “Work is inseparable from movement.” Purposeful movement in the classroom gives the young child an opportunity to do work that challenges them mentally and engages them physically without compromising one for the other. Our classroom environment allows children to move freely, practice different learning styles, and engage with varied works without feeling confined.

Cosmic Education

Cosmic Education

Dr. Montessori’s Cosmic Education curriculum fosters a deep understanding of the interconnectedness of all things, inspiring children to see their unique role in the universe and develop a profound respect for nature and the world around them. Our outdoor spaces provide children with opportunities to engage directly with the natural world, whether they’re observing birds, nurturing plants, or tending to our garden.

Collaboration

Collaboration

Montessori classrooms emphasize personal connection, mutual respect, and shared learning experiences. At our school children work together, help one another, and build social skills through meaningful, respectful interactions in a community-oriented environment.

Hands-On Learning (1)

Hands-On Learning

Montessori materials are beautifully designed to appeal to the young child’s sense of wonder and innate curiosity. Dr. Montessori was at the forefront of the concept of hands-on learning, believing that children needed concrete representations to comprehend and internalize abstract ideas.

Lifetime Learninng

Lifelong Learning

By honoring the young child’s inherent desire to spend time with an introductory material or choose a more time-consuming, multi-step work, we perpetuate that the child knows what is best for them. Dr. Montessori believed that “the spontaneous urge towards development, which is within the child, dictates its own pace.” It is the uninterrupted work cycle that empowers the child to listen to their intuition thus laying a foundation for self-guided, lifelong learning.

Our Location

The Children’s House is a few steps from the Broad and Oregon subway and walkable or bikeable from many South Philly locations. Our beautiful sunlit classrooms, each with their distinctive decor and personality, open to large outdoor spaces, which we affectionately call our “meadow” and “garden.”

OUR STORY

The Children’s House is a community of families interested in the larger community of South Philadelphia. Our school was founded by Mary D’Anella, a lifelong South Philadelphian and a proponent of early Montessori education, her daughter Mariangela, and her daughter Isabella, a longtime educator who began her schooling at a Montessori Preschool.

In 1907 Maria Montessori, an Italian physician and pioneer in early childhood education, opened the first Children's House, called Casa dei Bambini, in Rome. Her system was based on a belief that true education had to involve a natural unfolding of the young child's innate talents and interests. The approach was both scientific and humanistic.

Dr. Montessori realized that children's play is their work. So, she used the term "work" to describe all classroom activities—and we ensure that our Montessori students “delight” in working hard.

Montessori schools teach the same basic skills as traditional schools—math, science, history, geography, language. But unlike most typical curricula, our rigorous academic program weaves the separate strands of the curriculum together. This interdisciplinary approach allows students to immerse themselves in a topic while encouraging their natural born curiosity and desire to learn.
